On January 25th, students in the Lake Sediment Analysis course set out to Unity Pond, (aka Lake Winnecook) in order to collect a sediment core. The sediments will be examined in order to reconstruct environmental conditions ever since Unity was ocean-front property – about 14,000 years ago! Coring was a success – we recovered about 6m of mud before noon. Students will spend the rest of the semester looking at pollen, charcoal, and organic matter content in order to reconstruct climate and vegetation characteristics. A few of us stayed behind at the shack in order to get some ice fishing in, which was also a success. Flag!
