Sarah, Abby, and Gunther were sent back to the 6th grade, in a good way! Responding to a request from a local middle school science teacher, these three prepared a lesson on rocks and minerals and Earth’s structure. They led two back-to-back teaching demos and split the classes into smaller groups each focusing on a designated topic. The students had an opportunity to handle a variety of rock and mineral samples; look at thin-sections using a polarizing light microscope; and review the layers of Earth, their characteristics, and formation history. Some general Q & A concluded the demo. Feedback from the teacher included comments such as “outstanding” and “engaging” and the students had an “awesome” time.
